ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong desire to perform Graham repertory
  • Advanced Ballet and/or Contemporary Technique
  • Must enroll in the Advanced Studies Certificate Program
  • Must complete Online Audition requirements
  • Must attend Callback Auditions if invited

  • Intermediate Graham Technique™ (Graham II or higher)
  • Intermediate Ballet Technique

  • Pre-requisites: Graduate of Graham School Two-Year Certificate Program and/or University Degree with a notable dance program or Dance Conservatory Degree or Certificate
  • Advanced Graham Technique™ (Graham III or higher, per discretion of Program Director)

STEP 1: APPLICATION

Required Applications for all programs must include:

  • Completed Application Form
  • Dance résumé
  • Headshot
  • Photograph of applicant in first arabesque on leg of choice (en relevé or flat). Applicants must also include sign in photo reading “Martha Graham School Application” and the date.
  • 500-word personal statement explaining your desire to study at the Martha Graham School
  • One letter of recommendation
  • $50 Application Fee

Please note the program(s) to which you are applying in the body of your email. All application and audition materials (if applicable) should be sent together. Applications will not be processed until all materials have been received.

STEP 2: AUDITION

Required for Two-Year Certificate Program, Teacher Training Program, and Advanced Studies Certificate (including Graham 2).

Audition Deadlines:

  • May 3: All program applications due
  • June 22: Graham 2 Callback Auditions (in-person and via Zoom)
  • June 28: Accepted students must confer attendance for Fall Semester 2024

Note that international students must complete their applications for any and all programs by May 3 to ensure timely processing of their visa materials.

ONLINE AUDITION

Online auditions should include three video recordings.

Videos must be uploaded to YouTube or Vimeo. If you upload your videos as private, you must send us the passwords for viewing.

Recordings may be filmed from any well-lit space, including the applicant’s home, provided the dancer is fully in frame.  Please wear a colored unitard, leotard and tights, or other form-fitting attire.

Online Audition NOT required for Independent Program applicants.

1. Martha Graham Technique™ Floor Work Demonstration

Begin with a short technical demonstration of Graham’s floor work. Each submission must include:

  • Breathing
  • 3’s and 6’s with Opening of the leg variation
  • Deep stretches
  • Turns around the back (4th position)

The exercises can be short. This section does not need to be more than 5-6 minutes in length.

2. Martha Graham Technique™ Program Combination

Prepare and upload a clear video of the appropriate combination for the program for which you are auditioning. Post videos to YouTube or Vimeo. If you upload them as private, you must send us the password for viewing.

3. 60-90 second solo in a genre of your choice

Prepare a short solo and upload it to YouTube or Vimeo. If you upload your videos as private, you must send us the passwords for viewing.

STEP 3: COMPOSITION + GRAHAM 2 APPLICANTS ONLY

Composition Concentration

Submit two samples of your choreography. Each excerpt must be a minimum of 2 minutes and a maximum of 6 minutes in length. You may submit solos, duet/trios, and/or group works that best represent your choreographic style and approach.

Performance Concentration: Graham 2 Track

In addition to the program application requirements above, all students interested in Graham 2 must submit the following to schoolauditions@marthagraham.org:

Performance Excerpt

Video excerpts (2.5 – 3 minutes each) of the applicant in live performance. Samples may be from solos, duet/trios, or groups. Applicants must indicate their placement in the excerpt.

Graham Repertory Excerpts

Review the video in this section. Applicants should film themselves performing the material as follows:

  • Men: Acts of Light excerpts (2:22 – 6:27) solo from Dark Meadow (7:53 – 9:11)
  • Women: Acts of Light excerpts (0:08 – 3:44) Solo from Dark Meadow (6:28 – 7:48)

APPLICATION DEADLINE: May 12

Applicants will be notified by May 24 if they are invited to attend Callback Auditions. Selected applicants MUST attend Callback Auditions on in-person June 22. Schedule to be announced.

All Graham 2 applicants are strongly encouraged to enroll in the Summer Intensive / Week 1: Advanced Graham with Graham 2 Director, Virginie Mécène.
