Martha-Graham-Dance-School-winter-intensive

December 30, 2019 – January 17, 2020

The Martha Graham School Winter Intensive offers dancers a rigorous program in Martha Graham Technique™, Martha Graham Repertory, Dance Composition, Ballet, and Contemporary. The Intensive is specifically designed for students and professionals who are unable to attend the Martha Graham School year-round or who wish to progress rapidly in the Graham Technique. The Intensive concludes in a studio showing on January 17th, highlighting student achievements in Repertory and Composition classes. Students will also have the option to audition for Full-Time Certificate Programs on Saturday, January 11th.

All classes are held at The Martha Graham School, 55 Bethune Street, 11th Floor, New York City (location + directions).

CLASS DESCRIPTIONS

Graham Technique

The Martha Graham Technique™ is based on the core power of Graham’s signature contraction and release. The Technique promotes strength, stamina, and self-expression, and serves as a foundation for excellence in many styles of dance. Each level is specifically designed for students to progress rapidly.

No prerequisite necessary; for students with little or no experience in the Martha Graham TechniqueTM who wish to learn the basics.

Prerequisites:

  • Solid Elementary background in the Martha Graham TechniqueTM
  • Strong execution of all Level I material (including Sitting Contractions, Deep Stretches with spirals, Turns Around the Back ending in pitch)

Prerequisites:

  • Substantial experience with Martha Graham TechniqueTM
  • Strong command of all Level II material (including Turns Around the Back to strike, Back-Leg Extension with Pleading to floor and Recovery, Sitting Fall with Spiral, Split Fall)
  • Apt to execute greater technical difficulty

Prerequisites:

  • Extensive experience in the Martha Graham TechniqueTM
  • Advanced and professional experience.
  • Ready to deepen physical and artistic mastery.

Graham Repertory

Beginner/Intermediate & Advanced
The study of Graham’s classic choreography offers students a deeper understanding of Graham’s expressive style as well as practice in valuable performance techniques.
All enrolled students are required to perform at the Winter Intensive Showing on January 17th.

Composition

Beginner/Intermediate & Advanced
This exploration of dance-making guides students in creating movement phrases, discovering their own artistic voice, and developing a personal ‘toolbox’ of choreographic techniques.
All enrolled students are required to perform at the Winter Intensive Showing on January 17th.

Ballet

Intermediate & Advanced
Ballet training at the Martha Graham School focuses on the individual students’ abilities. The classes are structured to enhance and support the study of the Graham Technique.

Contemporary classes build upon Graham Technique and encourage dancers to explore the connections between this classic approach and post modern styles.

INTENSIVE GRAHAM TEACHER WORKSHOP

January 6 – 10, 2020

For instructors who wish to deepen their understanding of the Martha Graham Technique™, this intensive, five-day workshop, lead by Virginie Mécène, reviews basic floor work, standing, and traveling exercises and highlights connections between them. Tips on how to introduce or adapt Graham Technique for a wide range of students will be considered as well as creative ways to construct a class.
